Congratulations to Tom Heinemann, winner of the Lorenzo Natali Journalism Grand Prize for a world-class investigative journalism television documentary ‘The Micro Debt’.
17 winners from all around the world were awarded the Lorenzo Natali Prize for outstanding journalistic work covering issues of development, human rights and democracy.
Tom Heinemann’s television documentary on microcredit is a shining example of world-class investigative journalism, challenging entrenched assumptions and debunking what the journalist characterises as ‘the myth of microcredit as a one-stop solution to poverty’.

Awareness of this barbaric phenomenon was previously so poor that the piece piqued the attention of the Head of the National Prosecuting Authority in the country, and the Grand Jury noted Farber’s novel and revealing approach to the issue.
Irak
The Grand Jury considered the article an exceptional piece, ‘documenting abuses in very difficult circumstances’. His efforts to confront enduring social and religious taboos have justifiably earned him recognition.
China
Tan’s article was characterised by the Grand Jury as ‘a very brave piece and a very strong story’, with Tan praised for ‘opening so many doors on the subject’.
United Nations reports suggest that accusations of sorcery are on the increase in sub-Saharan Africa. Adams claims that many of the accusations are entirely spurious, made only in order to rid deprived areas of old, infirm and dependent women. The Grand Jury called the article ‘a brilliant and disturbing piece of journalism’, showing how strong the women are and ‘not just presenting them as victims’.
México
The Grand Jury noted that the piece ‘deals with an issue that is very particular to Mexico but that also has international significance. The quality of the analysis is very high.’
The Grand Jury distinguished the report for its investigative merit in highlighting a human rights issue occurring in a highly-developed European Member State. The piece was characterised as ‘a technically impressive, investigative report into shocking and relatively unknown human rights violations’.
